About Me

Welcome to my Blog!
Opus One Winery

My name is Moritz Bak, I’m a Wine graduate from Plumpton College/ Universtiy of Brighton. My aim is to become a Winemaker for a winery in California.
My passion for wine came from my grandfather and seeing the amazing Swiss terraced vineyards covered in snow, which we would always pass whilst driving to Zermatt from Geneva on the family skiing holiday. My grandfather was as very knowledgeable man and knew a lot about different wines and would always tell me interesting stories of how the wine is made and how to taste wine – in particular about the French Terroir.
I was 16 with my mind set on becoming a Vineyard Manager and Winemaker. I was at a boarding school - Milton Abbey School in Dorset (UK) close to the town Blandford Forum and  came up with a plan that I put forward to the Headmaster:
“ Sir I am very keen to become a Winemaker and a Vineyard Manger,  will you give me permission to grow a vineyard in the plot of land in front of your house?” The Headmaster replied “Moritz let me think about that one and come and find me tomorrow.” The following day (very early – as I am impatient) I went back and his answer was “yes, good idea Moritz. I’ll leave it to you, to your own devices to sort out"
Since my wild plan at boarding school, I have carried on the same carreer path and went on to working in Bordeaux at a winery called Chateau Bauduc in 2007. This was followed by taking a two-year Wine Production course at Plumpton College, and  graduating in June 2010 receiving a merit grade.
Since then I am trying to keep my blog up to date with my wine experiences!
Apart from wine, I’m also a very passionate skier, skiing in most areas in Europe as well as Lake Tahoe in California and a season in Whistler B.C.
Any chance to drive a Landrover is also high on my list of interests.
